Which LandCruiser Tow Bar Do You Need?

Toyota has used the LandCruiser name across decades of very different vehicles, from leaf-sprung cab chassis work utes to coil-sprung family wagons. Tow bars are specific to the series, year and body style, so start by matching these details to the product titles above:

  • 79 Series cab chassis (2012 onward): single and dual cab fitments, including X-BAR options on selected vehicles.
  • 76 Series wagon (2007 onward): dedicated wagon fitments. A 79 Series tow bar won't suit a 76, even though they share the same front end.
  • 75 Series utility: fitments for older and later work utes, with ratings that differ across the model run.
  • 80 Series wagon (1990–1998): ratings can differ between earlier and later builds, so check your build date, especially if you bought the vehicle second hand.
  • 100 Series wagon (1998–2007): split by front suspension type (see below).
  • Older utilities (1979–1984) and Prado: selected fitments are also available, each with their own ratings.

100 Series: Live Axle vs IFS

Toyota built the 100 Series with either a live front axle (often called the 105 Series) or independent front suspension (IFS). The two look almost identical, but they use different tow bars, and they aren't interchangeable. If you're not sure which you have, check your build plate or contact us with your vehicle details before booking.

Cab Chassis Trays and Factory Tow Hitches

On 75 and 79 Series cab chassis vehicles, the tray matters as much as the chassis. Aftermarket trays, toolboxes, service bodies, rear steps and long-range tanks can all affect fitment and hitch access. A long tray can also leave the receiver set well back from the rear edge, which makes hitching up and tight turns harder. Let us know your rear setup when you enquire.

Some later LandCruisers, including selected 200 Series models, have a tow hitch receiver built into the chassis from the factory. For these, you only need a tow ball mount (TBM) kit, not a full tow bar.

Heavy Duty Tow Bars vs X-BAR

A heavy duty tow bar is the go-to for trade, rural and highway towing, with a 50mm square hitch receiver and removable tow ball mount.

For 79 Series cab chassis touring and remote work builds, an X-BAR offers higher clearance for better departure angles, integrated rated recovery points and protected trailer plug mounting. Never recover a vehicle from a tow ball. Use rated recovery points only.

3500kg Towing, Payload and Wiring

Many later LandCruisers are rated to tow 3500kg with a 350kg ball weight, but a touring 79 Series with a tray, canopy, water tank, fridge, bull bar and long-range tank can already be close to its Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) before the trailer goes on. Ball weight counts against payload, so check your fully loaded weight. If you regularly tow heavy, a LandCruiser GVM upgrade may be worth considering.

Heavy towing also needs the right electrics. Depending on your setup, our installers can fit 7-pin or 12-pin trailer sockets, Anderson plugs for charging camper batteries on the move, and electric brake controllers, which are required for trailers with electric brakes. These are common on caravans and on trailers over 2000kg.

Supplied and Fitted by Coldys

LandCruiser tow bars are heavy, model-specific parts, and freight can cost more than you'd expect. Buying and fitting through Coldys means one team handles the right bar, the wiring and the installation, and every tow bar we supply and fit is backed by our lifetime installation warranty. Fitting is done at our Mulgrave workshop, or our mobile team can come to you within 50km of the Hawkesbury.

To get a fast, accurate quote, tell us your LandCruiser's series and build year, its body style and rear setup, whether a 100 Series is live axle or IFS, and what you plan to tow. Learn more about our tow bar installation service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What towing capacity do LandCruiser tow bars have?
It depends on the series. Some older models are rated to 2500kg with a 250kg ball weight, selected Prado models to 3000kg, and many later LandCruisers to 3500kg with a 350kg ball weight. Always check both the tow bar rating and your vehicle's towing capacity.

Does a 79 Series tow bar fit a 76 Series wagon?
No. The 79 Series cab chassis and 76 Series wagon have different rear bodies and chassis setups, so each needs its own tow bar.

Can a LandCruiser tow a large caravan?
Many later models can, provided the loaded van weight, ball weight, GVM, GCM and braking setup all stay within rating. We can help you check before you tow.

Can you fit a tow bar I bought elsewhere?
As a rule, we only fit tow bars supplied by Coldys, so we can guarantee the fit and back the installation for life. If you've already bought one, contact us with the details and we'll let you know if we can help.
