Which Patrol Tow Bar Do You Need?

Nissan built the GQ and Y61 Patrol over nearly three decades in wagon and cab chassis bodies, with both leaf and coil spring rear ends. Each combination changes what fits, so start by matching these details to the product titles above:

• Wagons (01/1988 onward): SWB and LWB fitments across the GQ and Y61, rated to 3500kg / 350kg.
• GQ cab chassis, leaf spring (02/1988–12/1997): rated to 3200kg / 320kg.
• Cab chassis, coil spring (04/1992–12/2014): a separate fitment from leaf spring models, with tow ball mounts matched to tray length (see below).
• Y61 cab chassis, leaf spring (04/1999–04/2016): rated to 3200kg / 320kg, with X-BAR options available.

A wagon tow bar won't suit a cab chassis, and a leaf spring cab chassis bar won't suit a coil spring vehicle, so check your rear suspension before ordering.

Cab Chassis Tray Length and Rear Setup

On coil spring cab chassis Patrols, the tow ball mount depends on whether the vehicle has a 7ft or 8ft tray. The wrong mount can leave the tow ball too far under the tray overhang to hitch up safely, so tell us your tray length when you enquire.

Many cab chassis Patrols have also worked hard for years, with custom trays, toolboxes, water tanks, spare wheel carriers, relocated number plates or past wiring work. Any of these can affect fitment, so check with us before booking if your rear end has been modified.

3200kg vs 3500kg Towing

Patrol wagons are typically rated to 3500kg with a 350kg ball weight, while leaf spring cab chassis models are rated to 3200kg with a 320kg ball weight. That 300kg difference matters when you're choosing a caravan or planning heavy farm towing. Always check your own Patrol's rating as well as the tow bar's.

Ball weight also counts against payload. A touring Patrol with a steel bull bar, winch, roof rack, dual batteries, drawers and a fridge can already be close to its Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) before the trailer goes on, so check your fully loaded weight before you tow.

Heavy Duty Tow Bars vs X-BAR

A heavy duty tow bar suits general farm, trade and highway towing, with a 50mm square hitch receiver and removable tow ball mount.

For Y61 leaf spring cab chassis Patrols set up for touring or off-road work, an X-BAR offers higher clearance for better departure angles, integrated rated recovery points and protected trailer plug mounting. Check number plate visibility with your tray setup when choosing one. Never recover a vehicle from a tow ball. Use rated recovery points only.

Wiring, 12-Pin Sockets and Brake Controllers

Patrol wiring isn't always a simple plug-in. Some cab chassis listings note that the wiring loom may need modification, and older vehicles with custom trays or aftermarket tail lights often need extra work. Depending on your Patrol and what you tow, our installers can handle:

• wiring loom modifications and repairs on modified rear ends
• 7-pin sockets for box, trade and farm trailers
• 12-pin sockets for caravans and campers
• Anderson plugs for auxiliary power to your van or camper
• Electric brake controllers, required for trailers with electric brakes, which are common on caravans, horse floats and trailers over 2000kg
