Which Hilux Tow Bar Do You Need?

There's no one-size-fits-all tow bar for the Hilux. Toyota builds it in more body and drivetrain combinations than most utes, and each one changes what fits at the rear. Start by matching these details to the product titles above:

• GUN/GGN ute (10/2015 onward): tow bars designed to suit the factory tub and rear step bumper.
• GUN/GGN cab chassis (10/2015 onward): fitments that mount beneath a steel or alloy tray without fouling the drop sides.
• SR5 with factory integrated tow bar: some SR5 utes left the factory with a tow point built into the rear step. These need a specific tow bar, so look for listings marked "with integrated towbar."
• KUN Hilux (02/2005–09/2015): tow bars are also available for earlier cab chassis models.
• 4x2 vs 4x4: a 4x2 Hi-Rider and a 4x4 have different ride heights and chassis layouts, so some products suit one but not the other.
• Trays, canopies and service bodies: aftermarket rear setups can affect clearance, so check with us before booking.

3500kg Towing and Your Hilux Payload

Many later 4x4 Hilux models are rated to tow 3500kg with a 350kg ball weight. Some variants, particularly 4x2 and petrol models, are rated lower, so check your owner's manual.

Reaching that limit legally comes down to payload. Ball weight counts against your Hilux's payload. A work or touring Hilux with a tray, canopy, drawers, bull bar, long-range tank and a crew on board may already be close to its Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) before the trailer goes on. Add 350kg of ball weight and it can easily go over. If you regularly tow heavy, a Hilux GVM upgrade may be worth considering.
