Which Colorado Tow Bar Do You Need?

The biggest dividing line is between the RC and RG generations, which have very different tow bars and ratings. Match your model and body style to the product titles above:

• RC ute and cab chassis (07/2008–05/2012): 2D fitments rated to 1250kg towing capacity and 90kg ball weight, suited to variants without a factory bumper or rear step.
• RG ute (06/2012–12/2020): heavy duty fitments rated to 3500kg / 350kg. Selected products need no bumper cut.
• RG cab chassis (06/2012–12/2020): fitments that mount beneath a steel or alloy tray, rated to 3500kg / 350kg, with X-BAR options available.
• Trays, canopies and service bodies: aftermarket rear setups can affect clearance, so check with us before booking.

RC vs RG: A Big Difference in Towing

The RG Colorado was an all-new vehicle in 2012, so RC and RG tow bars aren't interchangeable. Their ratings are very different too. RC tow bars in this range are rated to 1250kg with a 90kg ball weight, which suits light trailers and hitch-mounted accessories. RG heavy duty bars are rated to 3500kg with a 350kg ball weight, for caravans, boats and work trailers. If you bought your Colorado second hand, check the build date on the compliance plate before ordering.

3500kg Towing and Your Colorado Payload

Even on an RG, a 3500kg tow bar doesn't mean every loaded setup is within limits. Your vehicle's own rating is what counts, and ball weight counts against payload. A work or touring Colorado with a tray, canopy, drawers, bull bar and a crew on board may already be close to its Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) before the trailer goes on, and 350kg on the tow ball can push it over. Check your fully loaded weight before you tow heavy.

Heavy Duty Tow Bars vs X-BAR

A heavy duty tow bar suits everyday trade, fleet and highway towing, with a 50mm square hitch receiver and removable tow ball mount.

For RG Colorados used off-road or for remote touring, an X-BAR offers improved departure angles, integrated rated recovery points and protected trailer plug mounting, and selected products add an integrated bash plate. Never recover a vehicle from a tow ball. Use rated recovery points only.

Wiring, 12-Pin Sockets and Brake Controllers

RC Colorados use simpler trailer wiring, while RG models need a vehicle-specific wiring harness so trailer lights work with the vehicle's electronics without triggering fault codes. Depending on what you tow, our installers can set up:

• 7-pin sockets for box, trade and work trailers
• 12-pin sockets for caravans and campers
• Anderson plugs for auxiliary power to your van or camper
• Electric brake controllers, required for trailers with electric brakes, which are common on caravans and on trailers over 2000kg
