Tow Bars for Work, Family and Weekend Use

Searching for a Subaru Forester tow bar in Sydney? Coldys stocks a range of heavy-duty options for drivers who want that extra capacity while remaining compliant with legal towing limits.

The Forester suits practical light-to-mid-weight towing for things like weekend trips, family gear, small trailers and day-to-day jobs. But these vehicles are also a popular choice for lighter commercial work. A robust tow bar setup can suit mobile service work, property maintenance, site visits, acreage jobs, light trade support and small equipment trailers where a full ute would be overkill.

Common uses include:

  • bike racks and hitch-mounted carriers
  • small box and work trailers
  • compact camper trailers
  • small boats and jet ski trailers

The key is choosing the right tow bar for the exact vehicle. Models differ by generation, rear design, wiring requirements and towing capacity, so you should not assume one bar fits every car.

Need help finding the correct tow bar for your Subaru? Call the Coldys team!

Which Tow Bar Do You Need?

Start with the vehicle's year. We’ve split the products by model range because Subaru changed the rear structure, bumper design, wiring needs and towing setup across different generations.

Typical fitment ranges include:

  • 09/1997–03/2008 — older fitments, often with lower towing and ball weight ratings.
  • 04/2008–09/2012 — mid-generation SUV fitments suited to trailers, bike racks and lighter recreational towing.
  • 10/2012–07/2018 — later SJ-generation fitments, with higher-rated options available on selected models.
  • Series 5 07/2018 onward — newer heavy duty options, often with concealed fitment, ECU/wiring notes and more specific installation requirements.

Read the product title and year range before you order. The year range does more than describe the product; it tells you whether the tow bar should fit your vehicle.

Tow Bar Ratings: Why They Differ

Subaru Forester tow bar ratings vary across the range. Some older options list around 1400kg towing capacity with 75kg ball weight, while later setups may list 1600kg / 160kg or 1800kg / 180kg, depending on the model and tow bar design.

That difference affects real-world use.

A lower ball weight may suit a light trailer or basic bike rack setup. A higher-rated heavy duty bar may make more sense if you tow a camper trailer, small boat, loaded work trailer or heavier platform-style bike rack. Ball weight also matters when you carry hitch-mounted accessories, because the load still sits on the rear of the vehicle even when you do not tow a trailer.

Before you choose a hitch, check:

  • the tow bar’s rated towing capacity
  • the tow bar’s maximum ball weight
  • your vehicle's towing capacity
  • the trailer’s loaded weight, not just its empty weight
  • whether trailer brakes are required
  • whether passengers, cargo, tools and gear reduce your available payload

The lowest-rated part of the setup controls the safe limit. Your vehicle, tow bar, tow ball, trailer, wiring, accessories and load all need to work together.

Heavy Duty Tow Bars and Concealed Fitment

Later Forester models may use a heavy duty tow bar with a 50mm square hitch receiver. This feature gives you a practical setup for a removable tow ball mount and compatible hitch-mounted accessories, while still keeping the rear of the car tidy.

Newer listings may include details such as:

  • heavy-duty Class 4 tow bar design
  • 50mm square hitch receiver
  • removable tow ball mount and 50mm tow ball
  • rated D shackles and Smart Pin
  • concealed fitment
  • bumper cut required
  • specialist fitting required

A concealed tow bar hides most of the bar behind the bumper, leaving the receiver visible for towing or accessories. This gives the vehicle a cleaner rear finish than many older exposed designs. The trade-off is that some concealed fitments require bumper trimming, correct hardware, and careful installation.

Product inclusions can differ. One listing may include the tow ball, rated D shackles, Smart Pin, nuts, bolts and required mounting hardware, while another may use different components. Check what is included before clicking through and placing your order.

Wiring Harness, ECU Notes and Vehicle Electronics

Tow bar wiring changes across generations. Some older products may not require a separate ECU, while newer products can list specific ECU, tail and wiring harness requirements.

For later Series 5-style listings, product specs may include details such as ECU 04826 and Tail Part Number 4816. Some newer fitments also include notes for stop/start vehicles and specific 7-pin socket requirements.

This matters because a tow bar does more than attach a trailer to the back of the car. The wiring harness needs to support trailer lights, and the fitting process may also need to account for vehicle electronics.

Depending on the specific model, our installers may need to consider:

  • trailer wiring
  • ECU or wiring harness requirements
  • 7-pin socket setup
  • stop/start compatibility
  • reverse park assist settings and parking sensors
  • bumper trimming

If you tow a trailer with electric brakes, you may also need a compatible brake controller. This becomes more relevant when towing heavier camper trailers, small caravans or loaded work trailers.

Tow Bars for Light Commercial Use

A Subaru Forester is not a heavy-duty trade ute, but it can work well for lighter commercial use. Many mobile workers, property managers, site supervisors, landscapers, maintenance teams and small business owners use a Forester because it combines daily driving comfort with enough towing ability for smaller jobs.

This setup may suit:

  • small equipment and maintenance trailers
  • light landscaping or gardening trailers
  • site gear for inspections or mobile service work

For this type of use, stay realistic. Regular loaded work trailers place more demand on the vehicle than occasional weekend towing. Check the trailer’s loaded weight, ball weight, towing capacity, wiring harness and braking requirements before you rely on the car for work.

Stock, Ordering and Fitment Help

Coldys stocks Subaru Forester tow bar products for different model years, but availability can change by product, supplier and vehicle application. If an item appears in stock, check the product page for the matching year, rating, included parts and any fitment notes before you add it to cart.

If you feel unsure, contact Coldys before ordering. Tell us:

  • your vehicle's year
  • the exact Subaru model or variant
  • whether the engine or gearbox affects your vehicle listing
  • what you plan to tow
  • whether you need a wiring harness
  • whether you want fitting at our Mulgrave workshop or mobile fitting within 50km of the Hawkesbury region

That information helps us confirm the right tow bar, avoid incorrect fitment and make the process easier.
