Which D-MAX Tow Bar Do You Need?

The biggest dividing line is 2020. Isuzu released an all-new D-MAX in 07/2020, so tow bars for the earlier model won't suit the current one. From there, the rear setup decides the fit. Match these details to the product titles above:

• 2012–2020 ute with factory bumper/step: heavy duty fitments designed to mount around the factory rear step, rated to 3500kg / 350kg.
• 2012–2020 ute without factory bumper/step: a separate fitment for base variants and utes without the factory step. The two aren't interchangeable, so check your rear end before ordering.
• 2012–2020 cab chassis: fitments that mount beneath a steel or alloy tray, with heavy duty and X-BAR options on selected vehicles.
• 2020-onward ute and cab chassis: fitments for the current D-MAX, with X-BAR options on selected cab chassis models.

Shared Platform with the Mazda BT-50

The 2020-onward D-MAX shares its underpinnings with the current Mazda BT-50, so some tow bars in this range are listed to suit both vehicles. If you see a D-MAX / BT-50 listing, check the year range and body style match your vehicle.

3500kg Towing and Your D-MAX Payload

Many D-MAX tow bars are rated to 3500kg with a 350kg ball weight, but your vehicle's own rating is what counts. Some variants are rated lower, so check your owner's manual.

Ball weight also counts against payload. A work or touring D-MAX with a tray, canopy, drawers, bull bar and a crew on board may already be close to its Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) before the trailer goes on, and 350kg on the tow ball can push it over. If you regularly tow heavy, a D-MAX GVM upgrade may be worth considering.

Heavy Duty Tow Bars vs X-BAR

A heavy duty tow bar suits everyday trade, fleet and highway towing, with a 50mm square hitch receiver and removable tow ball mount. Selected products fit with no bumper cut.

An X-BAR is built for off-road touring and remote work, with improved departure angles, integrated rated recovery points and protected trailer plug mounting. Selected cab chassis models add an integrated bash plate. Never recover a vehicle from a tow ball. Use rated recovery points only.

Wiring, 12-Pin Sockets and Brake Controllers

The 2020-onward D-MAX carries more electronic safety systems than the earlier model, and newer tow bar products can require a specific ECU and wiring harness so trailer lights work without triggering fault codes. Earlier models generally use simpler wiring. Depending on what you tow, our installers can set up:

• 7-pin sockets for box, trade and work trailers
• 12-pin sockets for caravans and campers
• Anderson plugs for auxiliary power to your van or camper
• Electric brake controllers, required for trailers with electric brakes, which are common on caravans and on trailers over 2000kg
